BBZ & Lex Veldhuis: Database Study Session

At the beginning of our BBZ & Lex Veldhuis: Database Study Session video, Lex and Jordan “bigbluffzinc” Drummond (a.k.a. BBZ) take a look through Lex’s PokerTracker stats to find areas he can work on.

“There are truths in there that you can’t go around,” says Lex. “It is what it is. This is the framework of your game.”

BBZ starts off by looking at Lex’s win rates by position, so when you come up to open up your own HUDs for review, you should probably start there too. The ‘big blind per 100 hands’ stat (BB/100) shows how many big blinds per 100 hands you’re winning from those positions and is a real indicator of how well-formed your strategy is from each position.

For example, in the video, BBZ notes that Lex’s big blind win rate is lower than it should be (he suggests the figure should be “something around the low -20s”), so right away this gives Lex something to work on. He can now hone his study of big blind calling and raising ranges using BBZ’s charts in a bid to increase that number.

But while Lex’s big blind win rate is lower than it should be, BBZ also points out that his win rate from the button is very good, which helps to absorb his lower-than-optimal big blind win rate.

“The only positions that are too low are the big blind and maybe the cutoff,” says BBZ. Lex’s cutoff stat is 21.61, but BBZ suggests a better number would be around 23-24.

“That stands out immediately to me,” says Lex. “I think cutoff versus button I have some issues with, some out of position stuff, some c-betting on boards I should check more. I also don’t think I’m trap-flatting enough from the cutoff to let the button squeeze come in.”

These are all areas Lex can work on through his study of poker charts.

$2,100 PKO SCOOP Review w/ Fintan Hand

Cast your minds back to April 2021. The Twitch Poker world was on fire when PokerStars Team Pro and BBZ Poker streamer Fintan “easywithaces” Hand took down a whopping $232K when he won his second Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) title in a $5K buy-in event.

But the excitement and craziness didn’t stop there. Just a couple of days later, Fintan was on the verge of winning his second title of the series and third overall, reaching the final table of a $2K SCOOP Sunday Warm-Up.

Alas, he’d fall in fourth for another big score worth $48K, but the tournament provided plenty of food for thought, as we discovered in our $2,100 PKO SCOOP Review w/ Fintan Hand video.

Here’s a look at one of the many interesting hands discussed in the video. It involves the ‘magic hand’: ace-five suited.

Nine players remain and Fintan is dealt A♦5♦ in the lojack with 18.5 big blinds in front of him. Action folds to him and he opts to lay it down.

What’s interesting is that one orbit prior to this one, Fintan had opened with K♠J♦ from the same position. So BBZ asks what went into Fintan’s thought process when making the open-fold.

“The K♠J♦ open I felt was close, but there was at least the added incentive of the shorter stack,” he says, referring to the fact that the player in the hijack had only eight big blinds during that hand, so Fintan could have potentially won their bounty had he knocked them out. Alas, that player has since doubled up and now covers Fintan.

“Everyone can make my life pretty horrible,” he continues. “There are two shoving stacks on my direct left (16.2 and 21.1 big blinds), so if I fold here, there’s potential for one of them to bust. Also, the shortest stack in the tournament (UTG – 12.2 big blinds) has already folded, and they’re in the big blind next.

“I didn’t want to get too out of line with the potential for someone else to bust, but it pained me to fold A♦5♦,” he finishes.

So, what did BBZ make of the fold? Would he have opened it despite all the reasons Fintan listed for folding?

“I would open A5-suited but I’d probably fold A2-suited, A3-suited, A4-suited, and A6-suited,” says BBZ.

That being said, BBZ doesn’t believe it would be a very profitable open at all.

“The suited ace-highs are more resilient than almost all the other combos in the range,” he says. “Hands like 109-suited and Q9-suited I’d pure fold. I’d also fold KJ-offsuit and QJ-offsuit, and J10-suited is also a fold here.”

“It’s very understandable for tournament players who come from a rakeless, ante’d game to understand that there are wide ranges,” he continues. “There’s going to be a lot of check-folding, so smaller sizes are efficient.”
